About the precious alpaca wool:
By crossing the wild Guanacos, a humpless camel species from the Andes, with Vicunjas, the smallest and most delicate of all llamas, our present domesticated alpaca was created by strict selection over centuries of breeding. This lives on the pastures in the Andes highlands between 4000 and 5500meters above sea level. Its habitat is determined by extreme weather and temperature fluctuations. The scale ranges from -40 to +40 degrees. It is therefore not surprising that the animals have adapted to their habitat with a specially resistant wool. Thus, their elastic, silky shining and very soft hair is hollow similar to the human hair inside. Depending on the outside temperature, the air trapped in the hair can expand or contract in this way, resulting in optimum heat balance. A high fat content of the fibre complements the thermal insulation and makes the wool extremely dirt repellent. There are about 5 million alpacas worldwide, which are sheared only once every 2 years. One shearing produces approx. 3 kg of wool, of which only the best quality (8.5-12 cm long, 20-30 microns) is used for our wool blankets.
Thus, per 5 animals on average one of these luxurious rugs can be produced per year. No wonder. That this fine natural fibre is and will remain something exclusive.
